Day Unit

Where possible patients are allowed to go home on the day of their surgery.

Having Daycase surgery is dependent on a number of factors. What procedure has been performed; whether pain is tolerated with simple painkillers; what kind of home support is or can be made available for the patient at home.

The dedicated day unit is designed to optimise the number of patients that can safely go home on the same day as their surgery, and for an increasing variety of procedures.

In vascular surgery most of the patients undergoing procedures performed in the Xray department (an angiogram or angioplasty, for example) are suitable for discharge on the same day, as are those having surgery for varicose veins, renal access procedures, and other procedures that have low risk of complication and minimal discomfort.

Currently most surgical procedures performed for arterial disease is not suitable for same day discharge. For these procedures, you will most likely be admitted to the Vascular Ward (Ward 10)
